A Day of Firsts

Several things have happened today - or were planned today - that are firsts for me.

- I heard my first Christmas carols at the grocery store! We only have one radio station here so we aren't inundated with carols 24/7 the way people are in the States. We've had Christmas decorations since September, but this morning I heard my first carols. NOW it's Christmas.

- We're going to Mexico City this weekend! Ibis' brother's new baby is being christened in Morelia this Sunday, and we're going to make it a trip and visit his family in Mexico, as they call it here. (Same way we drop the City in New York). I've only been to the airport in our nation's capital and I'm really excited to get to know the city. You can bet there will be photos.

- Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was taken into custody early this morning. Now technically this is the second time this has happened to an Illinois governor in the past several years, but it's still so shocking I'm counting it as a first.

- Another first: on Sunday I went to my first Mexican quinciƱera. It's the girl's fifteenth birthday party, similar to a sweet sixteen but SO over the top. I plan to write a full post about it tomorrow, so for now I'll just include that in my firsts.

- Finally, I submitted my first short story last night. This online publication says they take 3-8 weeks to get back to you, so I'm officially part of the waiting club. Can someone please show me the secret handshake?

ETA: I cannot believe I forgot this one - I squashed my first cockroach this morning! He was sleeping on his back in the cabinet when I opened it to make coffee this morning. He was little, but still.

Any firsts for you today?

YAY Mel!!! I'm so glad you submitted your short story! Do keep us posted...I have my fingers crossed for you. Go YOU!

And I'll be waiting for those pictures of Mexico City. I've always thought it seemed like a very interesting place, and I'd love to see some pictures!

Come join us in the "no news is no news purgatory" room on AW, since you are waiting!

Thanks Jen. I'm optimistic but I guess you have to be when you first send something out, right?

Wendy, it's barely been 12 hours! I'll wait until I get the confirmation email that they've received it before I start stressing. Or at least that's what I plan to tell people. ;)

I'm excited you sent off the short!! My fingers are crossed!!

I look forward to reading the post about the quincinera!

Thanks Nadine,

I just added one more first that I cannot BELIEVE I forgot about - I squashed my first cockroach this morning!

Yay!! I'm so proud of you!!! Although I hope his relatives don't come to avenge his death.

Ill be keeping my fingers crossed for your story! (I think crossed fingers has something to do with the secret handshake.) Congrats on the cockroach crunch too! :) I am looking forward to seeing pics of Mexico..... City. (I had to add the city.)

Yee-ick! Groty. Glenn smashed a spider with his bare hands and I wouldn't let him touch me ALL DAY. LOL!

I have been so out of the loop on the political affairs. I had to take a step back, but this is interesting. It makes me wonder if Obama didn't like the "terms" of his threat and saw to it the FBI knew of it. Maybe I'm just imagining things, but it makes me like Obama better, that he didn't succumb to the whole wheeling and dealing thing.

I can't wait for your quincinera post!

Turkey, finger crossing... good to know. ;)

I've finally stopped adding the City, but I have to remember to with Americans or they think we're nuts.

Ha! Spy, I smush ants with my bare fingers and go about my day without washing my hands. I know, it's gross but there's just so many!

Blagojevich has actually been under investigation for quite some time. At least since Governor Ryan was sent to jail. He's been tied in with the same corruption that brought down Ryan, but I think a lot of people (me) didn't want to believe it.

Obama's opponents tried linking him to the scandal but he's done a good job keeping his distance, I think. I don't think he had anything to do with the Feds getting involved because they were already watching him, but I'm sure he's offering them whatever support they need.

Great list of firsts! Hm. Thinking... I went to the dentist for the first time in two years! I was nervous about what they'd find, but I shouldn't have worried. The visit was fine. :)

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Janna, that's on my list too. It'll be two years this spring since I've been. My dad is planning to have some work done here so I'll probably go in then.

Melanie! (re: ants) LOL, I would probably be the same way, if I lived where you were with so many ants! Although, I feel terribly guilty. I have teared up when I've let a spider drown in the shower.

Thanks! I didn't know the story at all. I was surprised to read he tried to pressure the President-Elect in that way, though!

Yikes to the cockroach!

And I envy you the Christmas carols. I think for me the best part of Christmas was hearing carols in the grocery stores. Now all they will play is that obnoxious Christmas pop. I can stand to hear some of it once a year, the rest of it never. I want O Holy Night, and Joy to the World, and Angels We Have Hear on High... It was the only time of year when shopping could turn into a sublime experience.

A few years ago, when I was going through the worst period of my life, I remember stumbling into a store and they were playing Pachelbel's Canon. I hung out in that store just to hear the music, music that restored instead of frazzling.

OK, so I'm off track again. Can I blame you?

Hm...firsts...I can't think of any firsts for me today. Maybe I should do something "first" on purpose!

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Spy, the whole thing is just crazy. I see now he's out on bail. The fact that they actually made an arrest means they must have TONS on him - I'll be watching this closely over the next weeks and months.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Janet, I love the classic carols. I don't mind them being sung by current people, but I rarely hear a "pop" holiday song that I like. Well, except for Adam Sandler's Hannakuh Song (I know I spelled that wrong).

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Colby, do it!

Zoe Winters said...

Congrats on squashing your first cockroach, and on sending out your story!

Lauren said...

Congrats on all your firsts! Ew...cockroaches. I just set my kitty after them--I'm too afraid.

Extra big congrats on your short!

Robin said...

Wow! That's quite the list of firsts! Congratulations!!!!

Now, don't be upset, but the whole cockroach community is buzzing about your cockroach "murder". The PA Cockroach Times has it as a front page story. My advice - plead guilty and offer up some cereal crumbs to the survivors. Or you can fight it in cockroach court, but cockroach sentiment is strongly against you. Chin up!

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Thanks Zoe! It was little so it wasn't too bad. The cockroach too. :P

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Robin, LOL! Between you and Nadine I'm going to have to watch my back. I keep waiting for them to surprise me. My girlfriend told me this afternoon that she found TEN in the bottom of her garbage can. TEN! Ugh.

Robin said...

See? It starts. Those were cockroach suicide bombers.

I started learning Creole on Monday. Does that count?
