Around the Condo

I've talked a lot about some of the odd things in our building, and today I'm going to finally show you some pictures.

First up, the water tanks. These two are for our building and as long as the pumps keep working, we have plenty of water. Trouble starts when the pump dies or "someone" doesn't pay the electric bill that keeps the pump running. That electric bill is still in the developer's name, so that's why it keeps happening.

Still on the roof, these are the pipes that run to the four units on our end of the building. Do you like the fancy bricks that keep the pipes level? It's amazing we ever even HAVE water. That's also our satellite dish and a possible storm coming in. Sometimes the clouds stay in the mountains and it never rains on us. Other times we get a downpour.

Here we have what appears to a convenience store refrigerator. It was there when we woke up several months ago and has been in that spot ever since. "Misc" is common in store names -- it basically means they have a little bit of everything -- and no, I don't know who Carlito is.

Here is the infamous "mailbox." This is why we tell everyone not to mail us things. Thursday morning we were leaving for the gym when I spotted my grandmother's handwriting sticking out of the metal bars. (Thanks gramma!) There's absolutely nothing to prevent people from taking what's there. In March the developer promised a mailbox that would attach to the front gate (which would also need to remain locked -- right now there is no lock) but we've yet to see anything.

And finally, the "yard." I don't think this needs any explanation.

Oh . . . I LOVED getting to see this. You are so good at describing things and noticing these little things, but it is SO fun getting to SEE all these oddities. I feel like I can picture you and Ibis and Owen there better. :-)

Thanks Erica. :) Unfortunately we decided last night that we probably shouldn't take Owen into the yard because we keep pulling tick-like bugs off him and that's the only place they could be getting on him.

Cool! You know, despite everything, the mountains look beautiful ... I lived like that once, and out of curiosity, I followed my water pipe because I thought, "Where are they getting the water from? There's no water treatment plant around here."

So I found where the pipe exited the house, then followed it up a shallow trench, to where it connected to a larger plastic pipe. It branched off as other pipes from other houses joined the big pipe. Eventually, I traced the big pipe to the back of my village, then up the side of a small jungly cliff. I climbed the cliff (where someone had conveniently carved stairs into the rock) and found the pipe connected to a large, OPEN-AIR concrete cistern.

Into which entered a stream.

Later, when I asked someone if it was, you know, NORMAL to turn on my tap and get river water, they laughed and said, "That's why they call it village water."

Which also explains why the water was always lukewarm no matter how much I fiddled with those silly little H and C knobs.

OMG, that's scary! We supposedly have a reservoir beneath the building so at least it's not open-air, but who knows where that originates from. There is at least one water treatment facility here so hopefully they're actually treating the water.

We have two knobs for the water, too, but the temperature is directly related to how sunny it is -- blazing heat = VERY HOT WATER, while rain = OMGOMGOMG COLD WATER.

Wow! Poor little Owen and his teeny yard. :(

It's awesome to see this stuff! Thanks for sharing.

Janna, we run him around the parking lot so he does get exercise. Once he gets his next round of shots we plan to take him to the soccer fields.

You have such a lovely yard! I really don't understand why you don't spend more time having picnics on it! :-)

Wow, and I thought my use of mail was an inconvenience, now!

Oh!!!! A grown-up Owen is walking past my camper! I felt like running out and saying, "I know an Owen! I know an Owen!"

He was a cutie, but nothing compared to Owen, though.

Natasha, I wish it was cleaner so I didn't feel so bad sticking him in there. Ibis thinks we should just take him to the roof since there isn't dogs or trash.

Cute!!

It's all soooo Mexico!! LOVE the mailbox and yard! Once again, reconsidering my retirement ideas to live in Mexico full time. Maybe a few months a year would be plenty. Speaking of tick like insects, that is one of the things that "bugs" me when we are in Mexico, my feet get eaten alive by little crawlies if I don't drench them in bug juice.

Is the satellite dish just for you and Ibis, or does the whole building get to use it? Not sure how they work as I have cable.

Thanks for the pics!

Mary (because I can never remember my google password)

Wow! Those are some really random pics. They are totally unique and interesting. I bet you could write loads of stories about all those items :)

Those darn ticks are such a pest. Sounds like you have a good idea with keeping him away from the yard.

Thanks for sharing :)

Love the photos!!

Very odd about the refrigerator.

Boo on the developer for not getting the mailboxes. Serves him right that he has to still pay the bill for the water pump. I'm curious who he would transfer it too - would you all split it?

So glad you posted these pics! Now I understand what you mean when you say 'water tanks'. Very interesting ways of doing things. (Yikes about the mail!)

Mary, I think a couple months is plenty. Then you appreciate it when you're here instead of scratching your head and wondering htf you ended up here.

Or maybe that's just me. :)

The satellite dish is just ours. There's another one a couple feet away.

Erica, that's just on our property. I'd take pictures of the neighborhood but I don't like it when the neighbors stare at me.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Nadine, I think that's why it hasn't been transferred yet -- they don't know who to transfer it TO. We're supposed to put together a condo association, but that hasn't happened yet.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

JLC, they're called "tanakas". :)

The poor tics are probably huddling in the yard to avoid the concrete. LOL at Natasha's picnic comment!

I love the pictures. It's such a bizarre contrast - the blue sky, mountains, beach, abandoned fridge. I can barely wrap my mind around it.

Robin, that's just the tip of the iceberg... I'd show more pictures of our neighborhood but I don't want everyone to worry about me. :)
