Cribbage

Have you ever played cribbage?

My sister taught me while I was visiting over Labor Day weekend, and to say we played non-stop would be a bit of an understatement. We get a tad obsessive about our games -- years ago it was gin rummy, and for the past several years it's been Scrabble. But now... ahh, cribbage.

I bought a version to bring back with me and forced Ibis to play, but we never made it past that first attempt. I was sure he'd like it because you use cards and a board (you don't get bored with one or the other) and it's all strategy, which he loves, but he couldn't get into it. A lot of it was my fault because I was still learning and it's tough to play when neither of you are very comfortable with the rules, but either way, we haven't played since.

Yesterday we hung out with our friends at their hotel (on the HUGE patio) and it wasn't long before someone busted out the cribbage board. Be still my beating heart. We played until it was too dark to see and dinner was ready, and I'm proud to say I held my own with guys who have been playing for years.

Today I'm bringing my new board for a rematch.

Do you have any games you're addicted to, or that you always play when you get together with friends and family?

Cribbage is an awesome game. My dad taught me how to play without telling me the rules first. He said, "That's how I learned the game in the army. I lost a lot of money." or something like that.

It's more fun when you get the hang of it. I'm trying to get my husband interested in playing as well.

I've never played cribbage. We play a lot of Monopoly because my kids love it, and Scrabble. But in all, I'd rather do something outside if the weather allows.

Alex and I went through a huge cribbage phase a few years back. It seems I relearn it every seven years or so, so I'm due to pick it up again soon.

These days when we get together with my family and friends in FL, we play hours of Texas Hold 'Em. I resisted at first then got completely sucked in once I realized how useless resistance was. We have $5 buy-ins bu because so many people show up at my parents' house to play, you can walk with a nice little chunk of money by the end of the night!

I hate that game. My cousin and his friends play it all the time.

If I want to do that much math, I will solve a problem.

Games are suppose to be fun, not tons of math.

My favorite games are Stronghold 2 and StarCraft.
I used to play Euchre, and Spades at MSU all the time.

I like to play all sorts of board games when hanging out with friends. I enjoy card games too.

I mentioned this on FB but my parents played Cribbage whenever we went camping, and I asked them many times to teach me how to play and they always said "later". *Sigh* Maybe, when my dad is up visiting, I'll lasso him into teaching me. :)

I absolutely love playing games. And cribbage is the one I always play with my mom. I like word games best, like Bookworm and Boggle and stuff like that.

I adore games. My family plays poker, but we'll play ANYTHING for money--we've even played the kids' game Trouble (you know, with the "Pop-o-matic") for cash. ;-)

I also like Rummy, Scattergories (word game), and of course Scrabble, which I will soundly beat Stephen in.

Beyond, that's a tough way to learn, especially with THIS game!

Wendy, I haven't played Monopoly in years. We play Sorry a lot with my sister's kids -- they have a handmade board that uses huge marbles as pieces.

Rachel, that's fun that so many people get involved. I tried to learn poker once, using pretzels as pieces, but never got the hang of it. I'd like to learn.

Penguin, that's funny you say that about the math because I was saying that as an adult, I have a ridiculously hard time doing simple math. Damn computers. :P I learned euchre after college but then I moved and no one played.

JLC, you have to make him teach you! Then when we finally get to visit we can play. :) I'm the same way, though. I'm happy with pretty much any game.

Elana, I play mostly word games with my mom too. She's wicked smart.

Erica, I LOVE Scattegories but I always have a hard time getting anyone to play it with me. I'm waiting for Stephen's retort.

Did Ibis play over your friend's place? Maybe he'll get hooked.

I used to love backgammon and Monopoly. We like playing poker with the boys. We all drink hard liquor and smoke cigars. It rocks.

When we're over friends' houses we like Pictionary and Trivial pursuit. But you have to be vigilant because Adam cheats his face off.

15 2. 15 4. 15 6. and a pair for 8! Whoohoo!

Learned it in the Navy. Great game. Need to teach it to my kids.

But I'm not much of a game player. Feels like its taking me away from something important I should be doing.

Robin, I tried to get him to play but he didn't. We're going over there once more before they leave so maybe we'll try again. Your family rocks. :P

Ferret, yes! Today I kept getting combinations of 2-3-3-4-5 type hands, and I finally figured out that it's ten, instead of counting. Unless of course it's with higher cards and I got a bunch of 15's in there. My highest hand yesterday was 30!

How fun that you get to play cribbage! We love playing games, especially pinochle. We would love to find another couple to play with, but since my last Craigslist ad didn't go so well, I'm hesitant to post again, lol.

Haven't played Cribbige before, but I love board games. I'm a Battleship fan, and of course, and any trivia game!

Sadly, my game habits have transformed into online game addiction *cough* Bejeweled Blitz... I know you may know something about that *wink* btw how do you get that high score!!

Nadine, I've never learned to play pinochle. I would LOVE to have a couple to play with. We moved not long after getting married so have never really done couple group things. And I'm sorry about Craigslist. :)

Erica, I haven't played Battleship since I was a kid! Yeah... Bejeweled. I don't really know if there's a trick for the high scores, you just have to watch for the combinations of 4 & 5 to get more points. I don't get that score every time -- I usually score between 50-100 most games.

No, never cribbage. But I love card games!

The game my entire extended plays at reunions and such is called Shanghai. My uncle brought it back from overseas when he was in the military, taught the whole family, and now we're a bunch of Shanghai playin' fools. I learned when I was four, maybe five, when my hands were too little to hold all the cards. In fact, I have so many memories and warm feelings associated with this game, I'm going to have to tie it into my writing somewhere...

Janna, I think I've seen Shanghai online, but never in person. That's so cool that your whole family plays it, and I totally think you should include that in a book. Perhaps the one about the woman whose brother drowned...?

Thanks for the advice. Glad to know I'm not missing something ;)
