Déja Vu!

I mentioned a couple days ago that we're watching a lot of playoff sports right now, but I don't think I made you fully aware JUST HOW MUCH sports are dominating our lives right now. Since we're in the conference finals for basketball there's a game on every night, and we're also trying to see all the Red Wings hockey games. I'm a bad hockey fan and haven't been watching the other series so basketball is winning out.

The Red Wings played Chicago for the Western Conference Championship and they won last night! Woot! It was a fun series since the majority of my friends are back in Chicago and the two teams have a rivalry that goes waaaaaaaaay back. After the way Chicago embarrassed themselves Sunday afternoon, I was happy to see they played a good game and forced the third overtime of the series. Well done.

(Sorry if you're not a sports fan -- I need to get this out of my system.)

Saturday is game one of the Stanley Cup Finals and for the second year in a row we'll be playing the Pittsburgh Penguins. Let the trash talking begin!

(That means you, Melissa.)

Oh, and lest I neglect my husband, congrats to Barcelona on winning the Champions League final against Manchester United! I'm cheering for Nadal at Roland Garros, but Ibis likes Ferderer. Grr...

Like I said, lots of sports...

I applaud you for having the guts to admit your you fannish (not a word, I know!) toward sport.

I already knew anyway from your Facebook status' ;)

I'm a fan of the Rugby League and have been since a kid. I get wild about it, but never really mention it on my blog - except for a sex scandal.

But I swear I can link my love of my team - South Sydney - back to politics because there the favourite team of Aboriginal Australians... :P

Go Penguins!

Ben, I try to balance out talking about writing and my daily life, and since I've been eating and breathing sports, it was an easy decision. I've talked sports here before (as evidenced by the fact I already had a tag called sports) -- no guts needed. :)

I'm somehow not surprised about the origins of your devotion.

Travis, you too? I'm beginning to think you're just against the Red Wings!

As soon as football season rolls around, I will be in full fan hysteria. My hubby and I are huge sports fans, sadly, for this time of the year I don't watch hockey or basketball...

Ron and I were at Lou Malnati's in Chicago this past weekend and one of the Red Wing games against the blackhawks was on. Interesting crowd! I heard the wings lost that game though. However, when I looked up from my pizza they had scored 3 goals I believe. Impressive.

Go Red Wings!

The rivalry between Chicago and Detroit is HUGE, so I'm sure the crowd was vicious!

They scored three goals to tie that game, but lost in overtime. Sad.

I prefer college football over the NFL but I can't get Ibis into it.

The only time I get excited about watching sports is when the Olympics are playing. Mr. Turkey is a huge football fan, so I will watch that with him, if I am interested in the teams. I would rather be playing sports.

Glad your teams are doing well!

Go Pens.

From a Die Hard Red Wings fan.
Again this year I am in heaven. I get happy any time a goal is scored. I love watching these two teams, and watching them play each other is a really great thing for me.
The only problem is that my 65" TV doesn't have any cable connection as I don't watch TV.
Guess I will have to stumble down to the corner bar and watch there.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Turkey, I'd much prefer to be playing, too, but I do love the playoffs!

Penguin, I just had a flashback to you and I watching the Wings win in '98 at your friend's house. That was a long night.

Do you still have the pictures from the parade? I don't have them here and would love to see them -- any chance you could scan them?

GO TEAM!!

I don't watch sports, so I just thought I would be supportive all around.

"Cause if you aren't an athlete, at least be an athletic supporter." :P

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Nadine, what is that from? I know I know it from someplace...

Thanks for your support. :P

Trash talk, trash talk. Meh...

PENGUINS RULE!!!! LOL

Does this mean I'm famous now since you mentioned me in your blog? :-p

Hehe, I actually started going for them because of it ran in the family. It's also a popular working-class team, but as I got older, those other things kept me loyal. I've managed to convince several comrades to follow them too.

And they even replaced the cheerleading squad with a drumming band.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Melissa!!!

Yes, you are now officially famous. Prepare to be papped.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Ben, that makes sense. My team loyalties all follow my family.

If the Boston teams aren't in it, we're not interested around here. Actually, I'm never interested. I read magazines while the boys and Adam watch sports. Did you know bright colors are in for summer? I'm getting me some green eyeliner.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Bright colors you say? Hmm... I'll have to keep that in mind.

Oh, and I have another reason to root for the Pens. The coach is from............
wait for it........
you are not going to believe it..............

SPRING LAKE.

Did you know this?

So it doesn't matter to me who wins. I am happy either way

Oh, and I think I do have the pictures, don't have a clue where they might be( I rarely toss anything). I still have the paper from the parade.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

I did! He goes - or used to go -- to our church! I knew of him because of the books he and his father have written, but I didn't realize he'd retired from playing and was coaching until the last round.

Very cool! Maybe if they win we'll still get a visit from Stanley...

Mine are in a cute little photo album that I didn't bring along.

Michael asked me to email you. He's very upset about the Red Wings winning. I guess you're to blame. You are one powerful fan!
