She's Evil, I Tell You, Evil!

Picture this scenario:

I spent the second half of yesterday reading about queries and working on my own (if you're in this boat and haven't visited Query Shark, do.) By the time Ibis got home I was cranky, tired, and sick of looking at the computer. I grudgingly made him two sandwiches for dinner then watched Nadal in Round 2 of the Australian Open. (I'm very unhappy with his wardrobe choices this year. Bring back the sleeveless shirts!)

I finished reading Grammar Girl's book earlier in the day, so I picked up the Dreamweaver instructional book that my dad brought for me. I read the first few pages, but that wasn't what I felt like reading. I had that feeling - you know, the one where nothing satisfies you but everything pisses you off? I picked up my journal and by the time I finished three pages, Ibis was sleeping soundly on the couch.

I really wanted to read a good book, one that sucks me right in, but didn't want to start something new since my mom and sister arrive in two more days. I don't expect to have a lot of time to read while they're here and I'd rather not leave off in the middle of a book for a week. One book in particular was calling to me, but I argued against it.

"No, you're too long. I'll be stuck in the middle of you for a week. Besides, I don't feel like carting you to the beach."

It kept calling.

"My sister will tease me endlessly if I'm reading you when she's here."

That didn't stop it.

I climbed on the chair, pulled it off the shelf, and wiped away the thin film of dust the coated the cover. I already knew what it was about, but I read the back cover anyway.

Tempting.

"It's 10:30 at night. My bedtime was half an hour ago. Why should I start a new book now?"

(Yes, I talk to myself a lot when Ibis is gone or sleeping.)

The book whispered sweet nothings in my ear, refusing to be placed back on the shelf.

"Fine."

I got ready for bed, propped up my pillows, and started reading, figuring I'd be asleep in half an hour.

Have I ever told you that Ibis gets up really early sometimes, sometimes as early as 4am? Well, I was still reading when he got up! I'm halfway through, at page 246 of 498, and it was SO hard putting it down. Even after I turned off the light, my mind raced.

All I have to say for myself is wow, Edward is dreamy. :)

As for Ms. Stephenie Meyers, you're evil!

ROFL!

Well done, Mel. I've done that before myself. I got up in the middle of the night for no apparent reason and read The Road all in one shot.

Books'll do that to ya. *grin*

I used to do it more often but haven't much since I've been here. I couldn't believe when Ibis got up to watch TV and I was still reading.

It's sitting next to me right now, taunting me, but I know if I start reading I won't get anything else done today!

I knew it! Mwaahahaha!

All the girls in my daughter's class are dying to read Twilight. But I think 9 is a bit too young, no?

They'll probably get a bootleg copy and pass it around anyway, just like I did with "Forever."

You know, I was sucked in so hard, I skimmed the whole thing, because I couldn't put it down, and I needed to write. LOL. I need to go back and re-read it!

Turkey, I was thinking of you when I wrote this...

Ha! I KNEW it!

Wendy, off the top of my head it doesn't seem any more inappropriate than shows they can see on TV, but I'm only halfway through and there haven't been any fight scenes yet.

But wow, the sexual tension!

Spy, I'm not a skimmer - I like to keep rereading passages that I especially like (for instance, when he said he'd given up trying to stay away from her - swoon!) but when I decided to set it down around 3am, I ended skimming a couple more chapters. Agh!

Janna, yes, she got me. I just emailed my sister asking her to bring New Moon.

*hangs head*

Welcome to Twilight ville, my dear.

*evil laugh*

Pink, I'm so excited to finally be in on the secret! I'm just disappointed I have the actors from the movie in my head instead of the "impossibly beautiful" manboy from the book. :D

Ack - another one falls! I'm still holding out, though I'll inevitably read it, I'm sure...

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Rachel, I wasn't intentionally holding out. Once my AW friends started reading it I knew I would, it was just a matter of getting the books.

I was the same way! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down! One of the few books in the last several years that has done that - Twilight and The Thirteenth Tale.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Nadine, it's been a long time for me, too, and it's just what I was yearning for last night.

God, I sound like an angsty teenager now.

Hahahaha! I found that series sooo addicting. Then I wondered if that made me a 14 year old. Oh, and it is so uncool for boys to read it. Kevin and his friend went with me to the movie but made me swear not to tell a soul.

Good luck on the Query, and have fun with your family!

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Robin, I just want to gobble them all up! I remember that about your son - that's sweet they went with you. :)

I read it in one 6-hour sitting. I couldn't stand up straight the next day, the dogs and kids were hungry, the house a mess. But it was worth it!

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Amy, that was me last night. I couldn't STOP! I'm not reading it that quickly because I have a habit of re-reading certain passages that, uhh, resonate with me. :P I still have 150+ pages to go but I hope to finish it tonight.

Re: Inappropriateness--I'm more concerned about the later books, when the tension is no longer tension. I don't want to give it away!

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Wendy, LOL! I'm so glad you said that because the whole time I was reading it, I was thinking "please tell me they do more than stare deep into each others' eyes and brush their lips together."

:D
