My Favorite Things

This meme has been working its way around the Blogospere, so I thought I'd join in. While thinking of my list, I had a twisted version that had all of them beginning with the letter F, but since this is a family version, I'll keep it clean. ;)

My favorite things:

1) Friends & Family If you know me at all, you already know these are at the top of my list. I'm a social person and those close to me make me who I am. Since I went away to school when I was fifteen, my friends became even more important to me since they became my immediate support network.

2) Reading & Watching Movies I love a good story, whatever form it takes. If I can lose myself for an hour of two, the writer has done a good job.

3) Fine Wines By fine wines, I don't mean expensive, I mean anything that tastes good to me. I tend to be more of a red wine connoisseur - cabernet & merlot now, although shiraz and chianti have had their moments in the spotlight - but I also adore a good Reisling. We had the white wine at our wedding instead of champagne.

4) Shopping I don't have to actually purchase anything to get the rush. I love browsing through the shelves and racks, touching things and imagining them in my home. Be it Target, Barnes & Noble, Banana Republic, or Crate & Barrel; I can spend hours in any of them. When it comes to actually buying things, I usually head for the sales rack.

5) Games Tetris and Scramble seem to take up the majority of my game playing time when I'm alone, but I adore real-world scrabble and dominoes, neither of which Ibis ever wants to play with me. My sister arrives on the 24th and I cannot WAIT to play both with her. I played tons of dice and card games in college (a lot of which seemed to center around alcohol) and I hope to add a Playstation or Wii to the household when we return to civilization.

6) Creating When I was little, I dreamed of being an artist, then a writer, then an interior designer, then a graphic designer. My drawing skills are mediocre at best, so the artist part is merely a hobby, but the other three have found a way into my life. (Again, the interior designer part just on a local level, lol - my house.) I seem to have an endless amount of creative energy and love watching my ideas develop into something I can see and touch.

Most of you have played along, but are there any favorite things you'd care to share?

I love scrabble!! How fun for your sis to join you there. Boy, you sure have a lot of family coming in.

Then again, if I had family in Mexico, I'd make sure to make a frequent trek there.

My mom and sister always beat me at Scrabble, but it's at least close with my sister. They're also bringing this game called Bananagram, or something like that.

This is the first time my sister & brother (who comes in Feb) have made the trip - they haven't seen Ibis since Christmas '06!

I keep thinking I want to drink more wine! Not a lot, but it's so relaxing, just a half a glass after dinner or during.

I like playing computer games now and then, too. I'll be obsessive for like two days, then go back to reading for a month, LOL.

Where's the chocolate? :) Great list. I love wines too. There is a vineyard only a few blocks from my house that makes a really yummy Riesling and Pinot Gris.

Spy, I love a glass of wine with dinner, but it's hard to keep red wine here. Unless you have one of those refrigerator-looking things to keep it at the right temperature, it spoils. We end up keeping it in the fridge - gasp!

Turkey, I know it's crazy, but I'm not a huge chocolate person. Sure, I LIKE it, but I'd much prefer something salty. However, slap some chocolate on a pretzel and I'm yours!

Well I have one passion.
Snowboarding.
And of course I have an addiction that is worse for my wallet than Crack cocaine, that would be jeeps.
And I love to snowboard.
I enjoy working on Jeeps, did I mention that?

That is a link to one of my Jeeps I built.

I like candy bars, but I don't like chocolate, I love the sugar rush it gives, so I deal with the taste for the rush.

We have the same definition of fine wines! And I recently dusted off our old scrabble game and my engineer husband actually beat me!

I love shoes and clothes! I love reading fashion magazines and putting together groovy outfits. I think about what I'm going to wear to work the next day as I drift off to sleep. I've got a dinner party to go to Friday and I picked out the dress on Monday.

My mother-in-law played in Scrabble tournaments, and once beat the Scrabble Champion of the world! So for a brief second, she was the best Scrabble Player in the world. It boggles the mind.

Love me some Scrabble. And Battleship. Can't get anyone to play with me either.

In the electronic world, we now have a Wii with RockBand2, so our family is a band now and we think we're all that! :)

I love playing scrabble! My hubby doesn't like playing but fortunately my friends on Facebook do and I often have a few games going at once.

So exciting that your whole family is coming!

Awesome list! A few details I didn't know about you yet. :)

Penguin, those pics are cool! I'm so impressed you still do that. How many have you built now?

And I hear you on the snowboarding. Aren't you proud you taught me? (even though I've never done it again...)

Rachel, wine and Scrabble are a perfect night for me!

Robin, I don't think you and I would get anything done if we lived near each other. :) That is CRAZY about your mother-in-law. Do you ever play with her?

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Hi Sharla! I really really want to get a Wii when we leave Mexico. Or Rockband. Is there a gaming system that has both or do I have to have separate systems? As long as I have a singing thing I think we'll be good.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Nadine, I will be starting a facebook scrabble game with you in 3...2...

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Janna, which details didn't you know? :)

Robin said...

Melanie, I'm too dumb to play with her. Adam can give her a game.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Robin, that's how I feel with my mom, but I still submit myself to her torture.

I'm with you on the shopping and the gaming. Give me a Scrabble board and an hour to kill and I'm a happy girl!

Hey Melanie!

What are your favorite things that start with an F? I want that list.

You can have it privately!
