The Olympics: Mexico Style

Did you know there are lots and lots of events in the Olympics? Gymnastics, swimming, boxing... oh! And diving! There's diving! I don't know how I forgot that one because it's all... they... are... showing... here.

Mexico won the bronze for synchronized diving, oh, three days ago and I believe I've seen the replay about a hundred times. Sure, they mention Michael Phelps here and there, but Paola Espinosa and Tatiana Ortiz are stars! There isn't as much live coverage as there seems to be in the US, and every segment starts with another replay of one of the winning dives.

I don't mean to sound negative. I really am happy for them. I think I'm so used to the US winning medal after medal that I forgot what an accomplishment it is to win one of those bad boys. Even if it isn't gold. Ibis pointed out that this could be the only medal Mexico wins and that those women really ARE stars.

¡Viva Mexico!

They showed that even here in the US as well.

Wow, I feel for those girls. What a horrible angle in that picture! ;)

I couldn't find a picture from the actual event. They wore purple suits.

I thought the same thing - they'll go down in history, in their bathing suits. :) I don't think I'd want that.

Hi . . .

My mom just told me about this event. Apparently she loved watching it on TV . . . said the divers are amazing.

Erica, it as pretty cool. And they were SO happy! Like I said, I feel like we take the medals for granted in the US.

I haven't seen diving yet, but the gymnastics and swimming have been cool. My boys are mesmerized by the women's bodies. I assured them that no girlfriend of theirs will have bodies like that, so give up the fantasy now, while they're young.

Robin, it doesn't get better with age. My husband still thinks he's gonna get a beach volleyball player. ;)

I've never even heard of "synchronized diving".

I have heard of Mexico, though.

It's so interesting to hear about the Olympics from another countries perspective. Some of my foreign friends complain that the US doesn't show enough other countries winning medals. Now I can tell them that Mexico is just as self-absorbed as we are. Yay!

i was watching last night with a friend from france and it suddenly hit me how biased the u.s. coverage is toward u.s. athletes. but he was a huge phelps fan ("phan"?) so there you have it!

also, you haven't lived until you've been in a sports bar and the entire place erupts in cheers as a girl in a pink leotard executes a flawless routine. ha ha!

Melody, it's annoying sometimes (for me) when an event the US is competing in isn't shown because Mexico is in something else. Last night we missed a bunch of gymnastics because the Mexican archers were up. But I understand it.

Sarah - !!!

That's hilarious. I can totally imagine that. I guess it helps that she's cute. :)

I like the "phan".

You must have Sky. We have Telecable and on TVC Deportes they have hours and hours and hours of non-stop, live airings of everything from the U.S. dream team to power walking to archery and every single swimming and gymnastics event taking place. I don't think they've missed airing a single event. They aired entire badminton matches, FFS. And the hot Spaniard who won the gold in tennis, yayyyyyyyy.

Yes, Sky. Good to see you!
