Photo Blob

Guess what? I remembered to bring my camera with me yesterday, and as tends to happen when I carry my camera, bizarre things happen.

First, some pictures from the market.

I'm providing links for the last two because they're GROSS and I know some of you won't appreciate blood on the blog. Here's a pig's head, and here's a large, unidentifiable creature (I'm guessing a cow because of the sheer volume).

On the way home from our friend's house last night we found ourselves in the middle of a traveling rally for a local politician (who happens to be the cousin of Ibis' boss). What the pictures don't capture is the music, honking, and cheering.

This was the row of cars before we turned onto our street.

Here's one of those megaphoned-cars, as I like to call them.

I've mentioned how people customize old school Beetle's here, and this is one we passed during the parade.

Here's the median on one of the main streets. It's a typical example of the landscaping throughout Zihua.

And finally, the counter is done!

Love the counter! Tell Ibis good job!!

Wow. They do look like rubber chickens, and that helps me view them easier.

The counter looks amazing!

Thanks Zoe. :)

Jenna, I did!

Janna, I think it every time we drive by. I forgot to mention that when I was taking the picture a man was hollering for me to go over by him for the pictures. I just ran away, lol.

Every morning we get up, look at the counter and say, "Hasn't cracked yet!"

The photo of the hanging chickens reminded me of a photo I took at a truck stop in Spain...a whole line of smoked hams hanging over the counter where folks were eating and drinking!

Wow! Great job on the countertop!

That pig's head was super gross. Adam is going to be one happy man when I show it to him.

Cool photos.

And don't look know, but someone stole your drawers.

Thanks for sharing those pictures. I love each one of them.

Oh, you had me at dead chickens, lol

I love the counter top, but it makes the drawers look a little transparent, don't you think?

Perhaps a darker shade of black would help...

Hi Dominique, welcome! The only things that seem to hang in multiples here are the chickens and dried meat. I should also point out that I was gagging the entire time I was in the market near the meat. The stench is overwhelming!

Robin, I took the big meat picture just for Adam. :)

Shadow, I realized that after I posted the pictures, lol.

Thanks AC.

Colby, you really can't beat a dead chicken, can you? Well you could, but it's already dead, so what's the point?

Allen, lol.

It's so smooth! I had no idea it would turn out so smooth. Ibis did a gorgeous job!

Ohmigosh, totally gross pictures, LOL. Do you get used to it?

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Thanks Spy. Of course he's pissed because I guess the guy who told him how to do it told him all wrong and it should be even smoother. Oh well, I'm happy with it.

And no, I do not get used to it. I usually avoid the market in the afternoons because that's when the big animals come out. There was actually a man cutting pieces off the "cow" when I was there. The chickens drip blood, and I've even been hit with spraying juice while passing the meat section. GROSS!

Great pictures! I love wandering around with a camera, too. And the countertop looks fabulous.

Ohmigosh! That would kill me! I was an exchange student to Germany for a little while in high school, and the family made their own meat.

I announced on Day 1 that I was a vegetarian, LOL. And I actually remained one for about seven years. I still mostly am. It's the pepperoni on pizza that keeps me from being a "real" vegetarian. And fish.

Spy, the smell... unless you've experienced it, there are no words. Well, decaying flesh, but other than that, lol.

Hope you don't mind, but I added a link to this post for my weekly My Town listings.

Where is Zihua in Mexico?

Barrie said...

Fun photos! Although i might have trouble eating if I were there in real life.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Travis, that's awesome! Thanks. :)

Zihua is on the Pacific between Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero.

Yeah, I don't eat much meat from the market.

Beautiful photos of the marketplace. Every exotic location has a different way of exhibiting their produce and meat. The hanging of the meat is to tenderize it, hence the smell.

Wow! Your counter turned out amazingly! It looks so good.

The pics around your town look really interesting. I did a double take on the chicken one because for a second I thought they *were* rubber. It's weird how different things are normal depending on where you grew up. I'm sure people from there would come to supermarkets in the Statues and be disgusted that the only meat option is pumped with antibiotics and flash frozen miles away.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Barbara, the smell... yes. I have eaten the dried meat and don't like it. I'll stick with the fresh stuff sold in my refrigerated section of the grocery store.

Thanks Lauren. My husband always said the chicken in the US has a strange flavor and I think that's the difference. They don't use preservatives here, at least not in what you get at the market.

Those chickens look almost plastic!!

Great pics - except for the chickens. Are those really chickens?

Melanie Hooyenga said...

I swear they are real chickens! Can't say I've ever seen anyone BUY one, but they're real.
