Day Two: A Fine Layer of Soot

Ibis made a lot of progress yesterday and now the house is black. Who knew fine black powder could spread so quickly? Add to that a torrential downpour last night and we now have fine black mud. We'd run out for dinner and it was so heavy on the way home that we had to stop a block from home until the water lowered enough for us to get by in the car. We wanted to take pictures and planned to run home for the camera, but not being able to get in kind of threw off that plan. Next time.

Before I get into more pictures, I want you to check out A Really Nice Murder Blog. Our favorite Soccer Mom posted the first five of ten lessons she's learned about writing from television. It's well worth a peek.

And now, on to the pictures!

Pouring the black cement

Smoothing the black cement

The transplanted kitchen

Admiring the pour

Removing the mold for the edge

What a kitchen looks like after a day of pouring black cement (the rest of the house looked about the same)

End of day two

Wow! That is quite an undertaking! Your place is black, ours is covered in a fine white dust from removing sheet rock. Hopefully our project will look as cool in the end as yours does!

BTW - Nice view from the kitchen!

Wow, Melanie, I can't wait to see the final pictures when it's done!

Am off to check that link, now. :-)

I can't believe how big the mess is for such a small piece of concrete. :)

Ah, no I get the black soot. But -- wow. Great choice on the color and he knocked it out of the park with the work. Well done.

Thanks Jason. The mold worked much better than I expected. And I do love the color.

It looks awesome, Melanie! Totally beautiful. I've never even heard of the whole concrete counter idea. It's lovely.

It looks like tar!

Robin, it's supposedly "the latest thing." Everything here is made out of concrete so it seemed like a logical choice. There's some high-tech stuff out there with concrete, some even looks like marble.

Colby, we said the SAME thing! It felt like rubber while it was drying. Now it just feels like regular old concrete. Once we seal it it will be smooth.

That's awesome!

So that it's black as you poured it meant you stained it BEFOREhand?

What a mess!
