Last night Ibis was playing with our video camera and snapped a couple pictures while I was writing. Yes, our video camera also takes pictures; it's quite handy.
Anyways, I don't think this is the best picture of me, but it shows exactly how I look when I'm writing. There's the notebook, the cushy chair, and around the corner is a fan blowing at my feet. I wrote about 500 words during that session, and while I wish I could squeak out more in one sitting, I'm proud of the progress I'm making.
Since joining the online writing group at the beginning of June, I've written roughly 12,000 words. And they only require 100 words per day. My goal is to complete the first draft by mid-August, and while I've definitely sped up in recent weeks, I'm not sure if I'll finish by then. I've allowed myself A LOT of crap, skimming through scenes that I know I'll fill out later, so who knows. Maybe I will get it done in the next month.
I meant to post last week that July 17th was the one-year mark from when I first decided to write my memoir. I started writing every day around the end of August, so if I CAN finish this wip by then, that'll make two full-length manuscripts in one year. Hmm, that might just be enough of a challenge to make me do it.

You know, you always look so happy. I dig that about you.
That's awesome! That's no small feat. I don't think I've mentioned it, but I'm really excited about the story you're writing. I haven't seen one like it; I think it's really cool that both your novel and your memoir show the "opposite" side of the fence.
PS: You do look happy! You look great.
Auria, thanks. :) I also look shiny, but what can you do?
Spy, thank you! It's strange. Two years ago, neither of these stories could've come from me. Now they pour out of my head with very little prodding.
Tonight I wrote a scene that finally incorporated bits from our trip to Juarez when we drove through the desert.
How cute you are!
Tell ol' Ibis that if he keeps publishing images like that he'll have to barracade the door.
An action photo of a writer. Gotta love it! Keep up the steady pace and you'll get there--you're doing great!
You guys are too funny! I wrote another 800 words tonight so I'm getting there!
Awww Melanie, you're a cutie! Every time someone posts a pic I think, damn, I need to do that.
Anywho...if you ever get stuck and frustrated when you're in the crap draft, try the book: "If you can talk, you can write" by joel saltzman. It was really helpful to me to learn to just let the words, any words come. And fix them later.
Thanks for the book suggestion Zoe. Unfortunately it's impossible for me to read any books not already in my possession. I plan to pick up a few while I'm home but it gets expensive. There's a library here but the few English books have nothing to do with the art of writing.
Great for you! Good luck.
And I still have to give you mad props for handwriting it all. Ugh. But to each their own!
Trust me. If you had my keyboard and no Sally, you'd handwrite, too. I'm SOOOO excited to get a new one!
That is pretty cool to see you in action. You'll totally get it done in time.
Leftys of the world unite!!!!
Aaron, I wondered if anyone would comment on my left-handedness. :)
Woohoo! Way to go! I've only managed 1.5 WIPs this year. Maybe I need to get my tush in gear! :)
Wow, Mel! Way to kick butt and take names. *bows down*
:)
Thanks Turkey and Jen. You're making me feel very good about myself.
Oh, and another 2100 words tonight!
A happy writer is a good writer. It is obvious from this shot that you are really enjoying the craft.
Best
Steve
So do you always write longhand, or is this a random time? I always try to write longhand, but my hand gets cramped!
This wip is the first I've written by hand since my short stories in junior high. I decided to try it this way for two reasons.
First, other writers kept talking about how it's an organic method of writing, and I thought I'd try it out. I do like how the story flows differently than if I were typing.
Second, my keyboard is SO AWFUL that I hate typing on it. The keys are so sticky I have to retype every other word. It's very annoying.
