Like a Duck to Water

Or something like that.

Schnauzers aren't known for their prowess in the water, but apparently no one told my husband because on our last beach outing he decided Owen would learn how to swim.

And swim he did.

Prior to last week the only times I'd seen Owen actually IN the water was when he was itty bitty and Ibis carried him out much farther than I was comfortable with. Since then I've only seen him run along shore, chasing Ibis and barking in this high-pitched yip that sounded more like a squeaky toy than an animal.

I couldn't believe it when I looked out at the water and saw Ibis running backwards in waist-deep water, Owen paddling after him. They went back and forth, back and forth, until me, being the ever-paranoid person that I am yelled for Ibis to give Owen a rest. When they came ashore I asked if Owen seemed like he was having fun or if the look on his face was more of a OMG! OMG! GET ME OUT OF THIS WATER NOW! type thing, and he said it was kind of a combination of the two.

I'm just happy he can swim.

There was also a lot of running, jumping, barking, leaping, and general chaos. And digging. Lots of digging. How the sand only stuck to his nose, I don't know.

I swear he wasn't as miserable as he looks here.

Great, I almost don't open your Saturday blogs and usually end up looking at the Mac tree out back.

Awwww! I just love Owen. He's the best. He looks so much older now, I can't get over it!

And I'm so proud he can swim. Of course he can swim. He's a special one. He's the best.

Trust me, before you know it, he'll be asking for the car keys.

Gary, I can't tell -- is that a good or bad thing? It looks like you'll have plenty of time to get to know Owen when you're here. :)

Natasha, we keep saying he looks like a teenager. He's got long legs but he's still scrawny and definitely has youthful energy.

John, that cracked me up!

I had a pit bull who loved to swim. Unfortunately she was sooo muscular, she would sink. My cousin even needed to rescue her from a pond once.

Congrats on swimming, Owen.

JLC, that's both sad and cute. Poor thing!

He seriously has more character than most dogs I've seen. Such a spunky little fellow! And as he gets older, he'll look so distinguished. One of the best looks for dogs, I think.

Nadine, that's funny about the wv. an I just say again how fricking cute he is?

Amy, he would ROCK them in the shallow wave division.

Janna, that's funny you say that because Ibis is always saying that he had no idea dogs could have so much personality. He talks to us and we're learning to figure out what he wants.

I always thought swimming dogs look so cool and dog-like. I think of Marley and Me when the guy lets his dog run into the ocean on the "doggie beach". Owen is cool!

Thanks Robin. I think he's the bees knees.
